Guided tour

The Aître Saint-Maclou teams are ready to welcome the public safely in accordance with social distancing and preventive measures. Numbers will be limited and visitors will be asked to wear a mask.

Accompanied by a tour guide, discover the monument’s diverse and eventful history across the centuries.

Located near to Saint-Maclou church, following a serious demographic crisis in the 14th century, the cemetery was gradually extended until the end of the Middle Ages. Due to a lack of space, this cemetery was raised with galleries containing the bones of the dead. These galleries are still visible, with unique sculpted decor in wood and stone, reflecting the funeral practices of the era and beliefs surrounding death in the 16th century.

From the 17th century, Aître Saint-Maclou was home to charity schools. For over 120 years, the cemetery’s funeral activities took place alongside the education of these young men and women at these religious schools. Continuing its educational history, in 1940 the ossuary became the headquarters of the Rouen School of Fine Arts.

Follow the guide through the courtyard and the ossuary’s newly opened passageway to understand the site’s many uses and activities. No detail will pass you by, from the three-sided sculpted skull on the facade to the bell in the schoolyard, plus the ossuary’s famous mummified cat! The guide will also showcase the site’s restoration and current activities, which herald a new era for Aître Saint-Maclou.
